Root Canal Treatment
Root Canal Treatment is often used to repair chronic gum disease, severe decay, abscesses, and other conditions that impact on the life of a tooth. This often leads to severe tooth ache that’s caused by infection of in the ‘pulp’ of the tooth.
The ‘pulp’ is located in the middle of all teeth, and is made up of blood vessels and nerves which gives the tooth the ability to repair and protect itself from damage. When the damage to a tooth is too severe, the pulp may become swollen and die, leaving it open to infection that often causes severe throbbing pain, abscesses or facial swelling. Root Canal Treatment cleans, disinfects and seals the space where the pulp was once located, and may also require a Crown to protect the now weakened tooth. The treatment is usually undertaken over 2-3 appointments of approximately 50-90 minutes each, depending on the severity of the damage. |
The Root Canals are highly complex and require delicate and fine work with fine stainless steel and titanium files and equipment. The pain should subside after the first appointment; however, it is crucial that the patient attends the subsequent appointment to seal the canals. Otherwise, they are likely to become infected again requiring the process to be repeated.
